Just north of Garlieston is Wigtown, once a thriving port, and now Scotland’s National Book Town. Apart from the attractive scenery and the varied coastline, the Machars Peninsular offers pretty towns such as Port William, still a working harbour, and Monreith, which was the home of writer Gavin Maxwell and offers a delightful, sandy beach.
