Cotacachi is Ecuador’s premium countryside retirement destination for expats from all over the world, and one of the top tourist highlights of the Andes region due to its breathtaking location amongst volcanoes and lakes. The property is only 15 minutes away from Otavalo’s indigenous market, Ecuador’s most visited place, and only 75 mins. from Quito’s airport.
THE PROPERTY: rustic yet modern architecture, with lots of custom wood cabinets, tile and bamboo floors, and open-beam vaulted ceilings throughout. The house has 1,400 sq.ft. (130m2) of interior space on a 5,200 sq.ft. (483m2) lot. The gardens are beautifully manicured by 2 resident gardeners throughout the development and around the house.
FRONT PORCH: this glass-enclosed enclosed area of approximately 200sq.ft. is one of the coziest places in the house, from where you will enjoy the view of the Imbabura (inactive) volcano and the manicured gardens during breakfast, or at night while enjoying 1 of the 2 wood-burning fireplaces in the house with gas log-lighters. A privacy hedge covers just enough so that you can enjoy this intimate space.
MASTER BEDROOM & BATH: King bed, walk-in closet with lots of storage space, and a large bath with dual sinks and a soaking tub and shower combo to enjoy and relax. The sliding doors welcome you into the private patio where you can enjoy the fresh air, blue skies and mountain views.
2ND BEDROOM: queen size bed with plenty of closet and storage room.
OFFICE/DEN: this is the ideal space to sit down on the recliners and watch some tv or surf the web. Help yourself to any of the books, movies and board games available.
KITCHEN: granite countertops, high-end stainless steel appliances, gas stove, brand new microwave, and every pot, pan, plate and utensil you will need during your stay.
GUEST BATH: full bath with walk-in shower.
LIVING ROOM: sitting for 6, with the second wood-burning fireplace in the house with gas log-lighter, and fantastic views of gardens and mountains.
BACK PATIO: 1,000sq.ft. of tiled private patio, to enjoy outdoor meals with a view of the Cotacachi (dormant) volcano while enjoying the tranquility, fresh air, flowers and birds.
PARKING: There is one (1) assigned parking spot for this house, and several for visitors.
GUEST INTERACTION: Bob and Juan have been hosting since 2014, and have hosted over 4,000 guests from 30+ different countries in their properties in Florida. This is their first property in Ecuador, Juan’s home country, and it’s hosted by Juan’s sister and brother in law, who live in Quito. They will personally welcome you into the house and show you around it, while maintaining social distance and using a mask at all times. You will be requested to do so as well.
THE NEIGHBORHOOD: “El Encanto” is a private development with 18 houses, most of them occupied by foreign expats and retirees from different parts of the world, including North and South America. Cotacachi is one of the safest and most tourist-friendly spots in Ecuador, so you can walk around town comfortably during the day, and sleep peacefully at night. However, this gated community offers 24/7 security with 4 full-time guards, and can only be accessed electronically by owners, tenants and registered guests.
GETTING AROUND: Cotacachi is small but has everything that you will need handy. Once you’ve settled in the house, you’ll be only 0.8 miles from the center of town (“Plaza Central”), which is 5 minutes by car or 15 if you walk.
Essentials like the open air farmers market (“mercado”), stores, pharmacies, restaurants and coffee shops are all located within 1 mile of the property.

As of December 2020, Cotacachi has been named one of the SAFEST counties in Ecuador by the WTTC (World Travel and Tourism Council) due to its effective efforts to implement mask usage and social distancing, and reduce the number of cases.
