Jubilee House is an attractive, detached, stone-built house, situated by the boardwalk next to Stonehaven’s beautiful beach and harbour with its pubs and restaurants. Originally an 18th-century sail loft serving the local fishing community, it was converted into a holiday home designed for groups and families to mark the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. The ground floor has been designed to be fully accessible to wheelchair users. Each bedroom can be made up as either a double or a twin room to suit guests’ needs. The private, open courtyard with planting has a seating area where you can relax and enjoy the sea air after a brisk walk along the beautiful sandy beach.
Stonehaven is a busy, historic seaside town which boasts many amenities including a variety of shops, some of the region’s top eateries including ice cream parlours, fish & chip shops and seafood restaurants, traditional pubs, historical architecture, and outdoor sports. It is well known for its attractive sandy seafront with boardwalk, picturesque harbour busy with yachts and fishing boats and its heated open-air Art Deco swimming pool. Stonehaven Tolbooth Museum on the quayside has a fascinating history as a former courthouse and jail. An ancient Fireball ceremony takes place in the town on New Year’s Eve, when people swing blazing balls above their heads to ward off evil spirits.
Perched on high cliffs jutting out into the waves, 2 miles to the south, is the dramatic ruined Dunnottar Castle, one of the finest and most historic in Scotland. Just south of Stonehaven you’ll find RSPB Fowlsheugh Reserve, where the spectacular cliffs are packed with breeding seabirds in the spring and summer. Stonehaven is situated in the area historically known as The Mearns, a large valley stretching from the base of the Grampian Mountains to the North Sea. There is superb walking along the cliffs inhabited by breeding sea birds, several forest trails and legendary waterfalls to discover.
There are several excellent golf clubs within a short drive, catering for all abilities, as well as several nearby distilleries and breweries offering a distinctive taste of the area. Traditionally known as a productive agricultural area, you can still enjoy a family farm day out picking soft fruit in the summer. You can explore bustling towns and villages such Fettercairn, Laurencekirk, Inverbervie, Newtonhill, Portlethen, St Cyrus and Johnshaven. It’s an area rich in history and folklore, as displayed at Grassic Gibbon Centre in Laurencekirk, with many historic properties to visit including Edzell Castle and Gardens, Arbuthnott House, with its walled garden and numerous prehistoric stone circles and cairns.
Aberdeen, the Granite City, to the north, is just 16 miles distant, which has an international airport, distinctive architecture and a unique harbour and beach culture. The newly refurbished Boardwalk leads you to the town’s main beach, but the property is only 100 yards from the Harbour Beach. Shop, pub and restaurant 500 yards.
