For centuries Mondariz has been an enclave of residence of the most important personalities of different historical epochs, from the Roman Burbida, to different personalities of the 20th century such as Pardo Bazán, Millán Astray, Ramón Cabanillas, Eduardo Pondal, José Echegaray, Wenceslao Flórez , Castealo, Primo de Rivera or the Infanta Isabel de Aragón as well as kings of the Middle Ages who specifically benefited from the medical medicinal properties of the springs of the Fuente de A Gándara de Mondariz, the thermal spring of Prexiguiero and the thermal spring of Chavasqueira and that left us as an inheritance for centuries.
In 1860 D. Enrique Peinador, medical specialist in "Medical Hydrology" and famous for the study of the medical uses of the waters and treatment of different patients, made arrangements to acquire the springs, of Prexigueiro (Ribadavia), in order to build a large spa there.
The thermal waters of Prexigueiro were valued by the licensee as waters with important medicinal properties.
Due to the neighborhood opposition of the Prexigueiro area, there were the springs of Mondariz and the A Gándara spring, where the initiatives and the medical-medicinal work of Mr. Peignoir.
