Founded by the Romans in the 2nd century BC. C. with the name of Forum Livii, at the intersection of the consular road with the road that led to Tuscany, the city is located in the eastern part of the Po Valley along the Via Emilia about 30 kilometers from the seaside resorts of the Adriatic coast and at the foot of the green hills of the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines.

Pino III Ordelaffi was responsible for the fortification of the Rocca di Ravaldino completed in 1480, now dedicated to Caterina Sforza.
