THE HOLLIES | Cottage dans Brampton
3 Chambre Cottage dans Brampton
Lovingly appointed cosy retreat in the heart of Hadrian’s Wall country. The Hollies is the place to slow down and take yourself away from the overload of modern living. Enjoy a digital detox. The moment you cross the cattle grid to The Hollies, you know you are entering into a uniquely special place to stay.
KITCHEN/DINING ROOM
A triple aspect room where you will love to linger. This is a uniquely created space with hand made elm wood kitchen by local craftsmen Barry Parker Kitchens. You will enjoy using the substantial and easy to open and close drawers for you to see the cutlery, plates and cooking equipment at a glance. There is a Whitebirk double sink made in England. While standing at the sink you will gradually notice that your feet are feeling the gentle warmth from the underfloor heating coming up through the terracotta tiles hand-made in Norfolk. As you look out through the kitchen windows onto the courtyard or over towards Hadrian’s Wall you may notice the beautifully made blinds adding coziness to the room. The sun comes in through the kitchen courtyard window in the mornings and around through the French doors that open out onto the terrace in the afternoons. Adding further character to the room is a very pleasing fridge-freezer to chill your food and drinks. By the dining table there is a three oven Aga or if you prefer you can cook with the hob and oven built into the kitchen. You will find the bright and carefully thought out ceiling lighting for cooking and the more subtle lights for dining a most attractive and enhancing experience.
LOUNGE
The attractive 1920’s fireplace welcoming you is an original feature retained during the extensive renovations of The Hollies in 2022. We managed to find just the right mirror to complement it over the mantlepiece adding to the warmth, coziness and comfort of the room. You can enjoy a lovely open fire with the logs and kindling already prepared for you and gather around choosing a board game with your family and friends or planning your next day’s activities. The plump sofas which are sustainably sourced and locally made by Slow Sofa will invite you to relax even more as you enjoy the views and each other’s company. The large bay window will draw your gaze out into the very heart of the Cumbrian countryside where you may catch a glimpse of hares, deer, oystercatchers, birds of prey and swallows. We have a set of binoculars and an RSPB mini bird book for you identify what you see. There is of course the delight of watching the lambs in the spring.
MASTER BEDROOM SUITE
The Naturalmat Fiodor emperor-sized bed has a sumptuous mattress and is perfect in all its splendor and place in the room and when you lay down and luxuriate in all its comfort you will know you will have a lovely night’s sleep ahead. There are two very large cushions to support you sitting up comfortably in bed and you can look out onto the courtyard and appreciate the plants and flowers with the backdrop of the trees and fields beyond. Or you may want to turn on the pretty bedside lights and curl up with a good book. You may like the flop-over-frill detail of the curtains adding that extra “je ne sais quoi” to the room. Subtle low-level wall lights lead you towards the en-suite bathroom which is beautifully and thoughtfully appointed. There are very pretty Fired Earth mosaic tiles and the large shower head gives you a thoroughly satisfying washing experience and as you step out of the shower feeling refreshed you will still feel lovely and warm with the comfort of underfloor heating.
THE COURTYARD BEDROOM
This is the second largest bedroom at The Hollies with a super king size bed with a Naturalmat tremendous topper. This room can be made twinable upon request. It has a lovely cushioned back support made by Slow Sofa's partner company Dalesbred for your quiet down time with adjustable wall lights to help make everything easy and comfortable. The Hungarian Goose Down duvets and pillows, organic cotton duvet covers, pillow cases and sheets only add to your sense of rest and relaxation.
THE GARDEN BEDROOM
The tranquil view through the window attracts you into the room and you can place your hands on the warmth of the olde worlde radiator as you go in. The chandelier emulates a glowing warm light with an interesting pattern across the ceiling. Draw the pretty blind to cozy up and settle down for a restful night’s sleep in the king-sized walnut bed frame with Naturalmat sumptuous mattress hand made in Devon from organic wool and coir, cashmere and horsehair for sublime comfort. All the beautiful blinds as well as the lovely curtains in every room have been hand made in Settle, North Yorkshire, by Dalesbred.
THE FAMILY BATHROOM
The lovely deep bath tub is an absolute pleasure to soak in and afterwards wrap yourself up in a soft organic cotton heated towel and perhaps go through to snuggle up in front of the fire. The sunset views from this bathroom picture window are most memorable too.
LOCAL EXPERIENCES
A range of experiences hand-picked by us for you to enjoy.
You are situating yourself at the centre of a wonderful region where you are able to discover the geology, the natural history, the rich human heritage and the beautiful and diverse landscapes for you to explore literally from your doorstep.
BIRDOSWALD
You may like to begin by strolling further on down the farm track from The Hollies until you reach the very pretty River Irthing. If you follow the river eastwards you can plan your route to take you to Birdoswald Roman Fort, the best preserved of all the 15 forts along Hadrian’s Wall dating from the second to the fifth centuries. The view from the south west corner of the site into the wooded gorge of the River Irthing gives you a really good understanding about how well situated the fort was for protecting the river crossing. Pottery found south of the fort shows the presence of people from the Netherlands, North Africa and Romania, which would have made it a cosmopolitan site of its time. The café menu at Birdoswald Roman Fort uniquely has a Roman-style burger made from a 1,500 year-old Roman recipe. After lunch, you may like to continue further eastwards towards Gilsland walking along Hadrian’s Wall. The path takes you steeply downhill to the River Irthing crossing over the river on the modern day Willowford bridge and continuing on you quickly come to the remains of the now ruined Willowford Roman Bridge, much further inland as the river has slowly migrated Westwards since the original bridge was built 1,900 years ago. While open daily much of the year, our experience has been that Birdoswald Roman Fort is open on Saturdays during the winter months. You can find the route for this walk from Ordinance Survey Explorer Map OL43.
LANERCOST PRIORY
From the Hollies you might choose to follow the River Irthing as it meanders westwards in the direction of nearby Lanercost Priory which was built in around 1169 from Hadrian’s Wall stone and lies less than one mile North of the Priory. (Ordinance Survey Explorer map 315, grid reference: NY55456373) It is worth noting that we have consistently found that Birdoswald Fort and The Priory are both open during the winter months on Saturday’s. And on certain dates published on the English Heritage website there are one-off events such as Falconry displays as birds were very important in the Roman belief system.
TALKIN FELL
A short distance of six miles from The Hollies takes you to the small village of Talkin from where you can walk up to the low-lying top of Talkin Fell, one of the best view points in Cumbria. It is a wonderful place to stand later in the afternoon. There are remote grassy moorlands where you have a chance of seeing the beautiful and increasingly rare Black Grouse and in the spring you will hear the sound of the males ‘oinking’. You will have the pleasure of hearing the curlews and may have a sighting of the rare Hen Harrier. After an enjoyable day out in this North-Western tip of the North Pennines you can return back down to Talkin village and finish off your day with a pub meal at The Blacksmith’s Arms, our preferred destination for a relaxed atmosphere with a good and friendly service. (Ordinance Survey Explorer map 315, grid reference 549 573)
CARLISLE CASTLE
It is well worth making a special trip to visit Carlisle Castle. As you drive into Carlisle from The Hollies, you will follow the one-way system around to come back on yourself to access the Carlisle Castle Car Park which we have pleasantly found to be free on Saturdays. There is much to do and to see at the castle, however we chose to mostly spend our time on the second floor of the keep in the area around the medieval chapel. The castle has elaborate deep carved late Medieval Heraldic graffiti There is a short passage way now protected behind glass where possibly members of the garrison or a priest may have been responsible for the remarkable carvings that have uniquely survived and date from 1480. There are heraldic beasts such as a crowned fish and a wild boar, emblems of powerful families and wardens of the Northern Marches in the time of Richard III. There is a mermaid carving which can also be found in Carlisle Cathedral choir stalls. Mary Queen of Scots began her nineteen years of house arrest at Carlisle Castle in 1568 and in 1745 Carlisle Castle surrendered to Bonnie Prince Charlie but his defeat at the Battle of Culloden firmly established Parliament as the ruling power, rather than an absolute monarchy, in England and later in the United Kingdom.
