The Terns is a beautifully-presented former fisherman's cottage now making a luxury ground floor apartment in the pretty riverside village of Glencaple just south of Dumfries, it is ideal for a family holiday and has all modern conveniences. The property is the ground floor of an traditional over and under cottage style found in some areas, step into the entrance hall and on to a welcoming open-plan sitting room, the ideal place to relax with loved ones, complete with wood stove style gas fire, for an extra bit of warmth, and a cosy but stylish dining area, the perfect place for gathering for a lovely home-cooked meal, or to plan the day's events. The kitchen, which is bright and modern, wonderfully appointed at the rear of the property, with a range of appliances and spacious worktops for preparation. Down the hall are two bedrooms: one King-size and one twin, with a separate family shower room. The bedrooms have a range of contemporary furniture to store your personal items. Outside has an enclosed patio area with furniture and an enclosed, spacious lawned garden, perfect for letting your pet stretch their legs. There is roadside parking available directly outside the property.
The cottage dates from the 1800's when Glencaple was a busy fishing village and port for bringing in supplies to Dumfries. The local tradition of haaf netters wadding in to the River Nith to catch salmon continues and is facinating to watch; local tradition is for the fishers to draw straws and the person with the short straw gets to choose where to stand in the line. Well worth watching out for as it contiues in all weathers, for as you can see from the photo.
Glencaple is ideally placed for enjoying the fabulous countryside, with many riverside nature walks right on the doorstep. The picturesque village boasts spectacular views over the River Nith Estuary, and on to Criffel, the highest hill in the area. Best experienced from a seat in The Boathouse restaurant and shop, you can enjoy this vista whilst treating yourself to Afternoon Tea at the same time. What better way to while away the hours! Not only do The Boathouse serve Afternoon Tea, but a bistro style menu is also available up until 4pm. Priding themselves on fresh, local, seasonal produce whenever possible and specialising in vegetarian, vegan, and allergy-specific dietary requirements, it's a great option for the whole family. If tasty pub grub is what you prefer however, The Nith Hotel serve award winning bar meals, with a take away option in place, and all just a 3 minute walk from the Hoose.
Nearby Caerlaverock with it's famous triangular castle is also home to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust bird sanctuary and, if birds are your thing, slightly further down the coast is Mersehead RSPB reserve, which boasts a number of wildlife hides, the occasional otter, beautiful beach walks and a visitors centre. Both reserves are well worth a visit, as well as the sandy beaches of Portling, Sandyhills, Southerness and Powillimount, especially if you have a dog in tow. Other activities in the area include mountain biking at Dalbeattie (as well as Forest of Ae and Kirroughtree if you wish to explore slightly further afield,) and walking, with the newly laid path up Criffel (the highest hill in the area) proving very popular.
If history and culture are of more interest to you, slightly further afield is Drumlanrig Castle, with its grand landscaped garden, woodland walks, craft workshops and boutiques. Alternatively, why not take a trip up the Nith Valley to discover Ellisland Farm which was worked by Scotland's Baird, Rabbie Burns, Crawick Multiverse which has recently been created by landscape architect and theorist Charles Jencks, Dumfries Museum, home to the world's oldest working Camera Obscura, or Moat Brae, inspiration behind the children's classic Peter Pan by J M Barrie. Recently renovated and opened to the public the house is a museum and national centre for children's literature, with an educational discovery garden featuring a tea room and art installations.
