Kalyvos is a village in the district of Mylopotamos. It is 37 km. southeast from Rethymnon. It is built at an altitude of 570 m and has 399 inhabitants, who are engaged in olive cultivation, viticulture and animal husbandry.
It owes its name to the huts, the first houses of the village that were built at a high altitude. to avoid the Turks. During the years of the Turkish occupation it was called Panochori and later Nea Axos and this because it was at a short distance (5-6 km) from Axos.
