In the heart of the conservation village of Ballantrae lies Hunky Dory Cottage. Its thick stone walls incorporate stone quarried from the ruins of Ardstinchar Castle in 1770 with Victorian remodelling and later, more contemporary additions. It is actually quite quirky.
A short walk from the cottage will take you to the shore and harbour, ideal for a gentle stroll or simply to watch the Gannets diving for fish with Ailsa Craig and Arran as a backdrop. Even the coast of Northern Ireland can be seen on a clear day. The village itself is well served by a local shop and post office, a medical practice, 24/7 petrol station, community pub, garden centre, thrift shop and an excellent play park for the children.
Hunky Dory Cottage has been furnished to a high standard with a comfortable suite in the lounge with Sky television and Alexa to listen to your favourite music, a separate dining room and a good sized bathroom with bath and separate shower for those who like the best of both worlds. Upstairs there is a master bedroom with king size bed and dressing area, twin bed second bedroom and shower room. The kitchen overlooks the garden which has over 60 species of plants and is a riot of colour at its peak and has everything you may need to make your stay here at Hunky Dory Cottage perfect.
The ornamental pond is a tranquil feature of the fully enclosed garden and with furniture including a patio set, loungers and tete a tete, makes al fresco dining a pleasure. A barbecue with coals is also provided. The summer house is lit and heated and has a wine cooler to perhaps while away a couple of hours with a glass of wine and a good book.
A short drive to the north will take you to the larger town of Girvan with restaurants, leisure facilities, supermarket and train station which could mean a day trip to Glasgow. Slightly further on is Turnberry known for its golf and hotel, Kirkoswald, home to Rabbie Burns Souter Johnnie’s cottage immortalised in Tam o’ Shanter or to Alloway, the heart of Burns country. Culzean Castle is within easy reach as are numerous other castles and the seaside towns of Prestwick and Ayr.
To the south lies Cairnryan with ferry crossings to Belfast for another day out and Stranraer from which the Rhins of Galloway can be visited including the Mull of Galloway lighthouse, Scotlands most southerly point as well as Portpatrick, Drummore and fantastic gardens such as Logan Gardens and Glenwhann Gardens.For walkers, cyclists, nature lovers or those just wanting to relax, Hunky Dory Cottage is the ideal destination.
