The Neighborhood:
The village of Retranchement (Truzement) is located in the western tip of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. It is the most southwestern coastal village in the Netherlands. Whoever hears this name for the first time will undoubtedly wonder where it comes from. The name sounds quite French. And that's right. It is a French term from fortifications and in Dutch means “bulwark”.
Walking the ramparts
Retranchement is a remnant of a much larger place with fortifications. Prince Maurits had two forts built in 1604 and later the whole area was provided with ramparts. Fort Nassau and the ramparts can still be seen today. You can even take a walk on the ramparts.
aisleless church
The modest hall church from 1630 is special to see. The church was visited on Sundays by the soldiers who stayed in the forts. The pulpit in the hall also dates from that time.
The mill
The Retranchementse mill is a grist and hulling mill. The post mill is still traditionally located on the Molenstraat and dates from 1818. Before that, there was also a mill on the same spot. It was built in 1643, but has blown over. Ever heard of wind right? The very first owner of the mill, Bartolemeus de Vos, had to pay three guilders per year for the use of the wind. The mill can be visited on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the summer months, otherwise by appointment.
Three border posts
Retranchement is located on the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. The Triplets of Retranchement are three boundary posts with the same number: 364. The middle of the three marks the boundary. The village is located on the Zwin and when the piles were placed, water still flowed through it. It was therefore difficult to determine exactly where the boundary lay. Three posts were placed.
Annual Summer Festival and more
The village regularly hosts events such as the annual Summer Festival. The festival, which is free to attend, is an afternoon full of music.

The owner of this accommodation provides high-quality bed and bath linen as part of the reservation total upon confirmation. One set of bed and bath linen per person, per stay. More can be ordered during your stay.
KITCHEN ESSENTIALS:
The owner does provide a few kitchen essentials that will cover the first few days of your stay. This includes standard essentials such as coffee cups, tea, sugar, olive oil, salt & pepper, hand soap, dish detergent, one kitchen towel, cloth and sponge, one roll of kitchen paper, and one garbage bag. We also provide a few dishwasher tablets if a dishwasher is available.
HYGIENE ESSENTIALS:
The owner does provide a few hygiene essentials that will cover the first few days of your stay. This includes luxurious bathroom essentials such as shampoo, shower gel and hand soap. Toilet paper is also provided in the toilets.
CLEANING:
The accommodation has been professionally cleaned and prepared. After your check-out, the cleaning and inspection of the accommodation are included in the price. However, we do ask all guests to leave the accommodation in a tidy state to respect our hard-working cleaning colleagues.
INSPECTIONS:
The accommodation has been inspected as well as possible after previous guests' check-out and will be again inspected after your check-out.
MAINTENANCE:
The accommodation is maintained as good as possible, and any defect or damage should be reported immediately. If any maintenance issues arise, we ask for patience and understanding. The owner and Huswell will do their best to solve any issue as soon as possible.
